Playhouse Acting Classes and Workshops

At the Playhouse, we believe everyone has a voice. Our acting classes are designed to build confidence, strengthen communication skills and develop a sense of ensemble and community. Programs for young people ages 3 to 14 focus on individual and collective skill development in a fun and supportive environment. Adult workshops offer an opportunity for audiences to enhance their experience with select productions.

*Each child acting class tuition includes a $25, non-refundable registration fee. Cancellations prior to the first day of class will be honored with a refund, minus the $25 non-refundable registration fee. Cancellations after the first class will receive a refund, minus a pro-rate for the first class and the $25 non-refundable registration fee. There will be no refunds given after the second class.

Lyric Writing Workshop

Adult Workshop | Cost: $50

Saturday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m. – noon at the Playhouse

Channel your inner Carl Perkins, the father of rockabilly, at our lyric writing workshop on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon. In the spirit of Million Dollar Quartet, this workshop is led by Cincinnati rock and roller Mark Utley. You'll discover how to tell your story through song by focusing on the words themselves. Adults and teens ages 16 and up with all skill levels are welcome!

Fundamentals of Playwriting with Deborah Zoe Laufer

Adult Workshop | Cost: $50

Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m. – noon at the Playhouse

Be Here Now  playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer introduces the world of writing for the stage. Learn how to build the foundation of a story by creating complex characters, writing memorable dialogue and crafting a compelling plot. Adults and teens ages 16 and up with all skill levels are welcome!

Forest Explorer

Pre-kindergarten | Tuition: $95*

Saturdays, March 17 - May 12, 10-10:30 a.m. at the Playhouse

Toucans and monkeys and snakes, oh my! Explore the wonders of the rain forest in this improvisation-based class while using your imagination to transform into different exotic animals.

Life at the Museum

Kindergarten through second grade | Tuition: $140*

Saturdays, March 17 - May 12, 10:40-11:25 a.m. at the Playhouse

Something strange is happening at the museum! Soar through the museum on the back of a pterodactyl to investigate mysteries within the exhibits. Use improvisation techniques to create a fun-filled adventure with mummies, fossils, mammoths and more!

Saturday, March 31, 10 a.m. – noon at the Playhouse

Connect with the next group of theatre-goers through playwriting with Allyson Currin, playwright of the upcoming world premiere play Sooner/Later and the 2015 Off the Hill production, High School Alien. Adults and teens ages 16 and up with all skill levels are welcome!

Physical Comedy Workshop

Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. – noon at the Playhouse

Get out of your head and into your body with physical comedy in the style of Murder for Two! Make audiences laugh while exploring the potential of space and movement for the stage with a Playhouse resident teaching artist. Adults and teens ages 16 and up with all skill levels are welcome!

MAGICAL TRAVELS

Mystical worlds await! Each week, we’ll open our magical travel chest to discover clues that take us on a new adventure. Learn about voice, movement and collaboration while working with fellow travelers to create exciting characters.

DRAGON QUEST

Oh no! Dragons are invading our castle! Soar to great heights, jump through fire and work together to protect our royal kingdom in this movement-based class. Use your imagination, body and voice to make new friends and train dragons.

Tuesdays, Jan. 16 – March 6, 3-4 p.m. at Montessori Academy of Cincinnati

MYTHICAL MUSICALS

Fifth through eighth grades | Tuition: $245*

Mondays, Jan. 8 – March 5, 4-5:30 p.m. at the Playhouse

Step into worlds unknown through musical theatre! In this performance-based class, we’ll learn about mythology while bringing to life scenes from shows like Hercules. Enhance your acting technique, voice and movement skills in this exciting musical class.

Creativenture Classes

Our 30-minute classes for children ages 3 and 4 focus on social and artistic development through improvisation, theatre games and a visual art component. We teach students how to band together as an ensemble and use their voices, bodies and imaginations to create complex tales and characters. Stories will be shared with families on the final day of class.

Dramaventure Classes

Our 45-minute classes for young performers in kindergarten through third grade focus on social and artistic development through creative dramatics, improvisation and theatre games. We teach students how to band together as an ensemble and use their voices, bodies and imaginations to create complex tales and characters. Stories will be shared with families on the final day of class.

Actor Quest Classes

Our 55-minute classes for young performers in fourth through eighth grades focus on developing the craft and technique of acting, as well as specialty subjects including voice, movement, improvisation, stage combat and makeup through fun exploration and ensemble building. We value process over product as young actors develop their skills and confidence. Class work will be shared with families on the final day of class.

Adult Workshops

Our adult workshops offer an opportunity for audiences to enhance their experience with select productions. We seek to create an environment that fosters curiosity, conversation and personal discovery.
