Please prepare two contrasting, contemporary monologues and 16 bars of a classic Christmas carol to be sung A Capella. The audition should be no longer than three minutes total; time will be called if pieces exceed the limit. Bring headshots and resumes with you, or submit with video link online. Please, no calls or materials submitted through mail. There are two ways to do a general audition for the Bruce E. Coyle Acting Internship Program:

Candidates will be provided with sides and a song. Additionally, candidates must prepare the Teach Me Something exercise detailed below. Candidates may be asked to supply additional materials through video submission as the process continues.
Teach Me Something exercise: This exercise is designed to gauge your current level of teaching ability, which is a large component of the internship. Please prepare to teach anything you like in a five-minute span. It doesn’t have to be theatre-related, and it cannot incorporate anyone else.

Compensation includes a monthly stipend and health benefits, as well as Actors' Equity (EMC) points for ensemble and understudy roles. Housing is not included.

Working within a large regional institution can be an adjustment for interns coming straight from an academic environment or independent theatre. Training focuses on communication, conflict management and etiquette in both the rehearsal room and office.
Strategic Career Planning:
Through workshops and mentoring, interns will be guided toward identifying the market in which they want to work post-internship. They'll understand how to negotiate necessary logistics, including graduate school, regional general auditions and all possible ways to make a living as an actor on and off the stage in the selected region.
The Business of Being an Artist:
Being an artist is a business and a lifestyle. It is vital to understand networking and how to have an active presence both online and within the community, including materials needed for self promotion.
As a professional actor, there will be pockets of time when supplemental work will be required between projects. It is important to build work experience in fields that offer flexibility while simultaneously establishing a presence within a theatre community. Acting interns will be given training in teaching artistry — including extensive training in classroom management, curriculum execution and lesson planning — and basic administrative skills.
Vocal Health and Sustainability:
As an actor, the voice and body are your two most valuable tools. It is important to monitor vocal health early in an artist's career to ensure longevity as an actor. The Playhouse takes this seriously and provides workshops and professional support.
Working closely with the Director of Education, each intern will identify goals for the year and assess progress and challenges. Feedback and evaluation of the intern's development will be given with support involving solutions-based counsel.
Through guided participation, interns work side by side with professional directors, actors, education and artistic staff. Interns will learn by observing skilled artists and implementing their craft at a heightened level of professionalism. Managing multiple projects at once will require interns to fine tune time management and communication. Between acting assignments, participants will be assigned teaching and office duties.
Main Stage Ensemble:
Acting interns join the ensemble of A Christmas Carol and other shows in our Marx Theatre based on the needs of each season. Understudying: Interns understudy multiple roles in A Christmas Carol and a role in at least one other show during the season. Understudy assignments are always age appropriate given that interns who pass the understudy rehearsal successfully will be asked to go on for an actor should the need arise.
Understanding the process of a large-scale production from behind the scenes is vital for building an appreciation for the artists that actors rely upon during performances. Acting interns will be assigned up to two shows of crew support, including but not limited to props, follow spot and costumes.
Working with master teaching artists, interns will observe different teaching styles, learn methodologies for implementing drama and lead games/activities with support and immediate feedback.
Working with the education and engagement teams, interns will provide administrative and event support for public and donor events, data entry, research and lobby display assembly. Interns will be exposed to a wide variety of constituents and learn to communicate with all of the stakeholders that we serve.
To complement the experience of observing professional artists, undertaking ensemble and understudy roles and assisting master teaching artists, interns will implement their skills as principal performers and lead teachers through the Playhouse's outreach programs. Interns will play roles in one to three productions throughout the season for youth and families that tour to schools and community centers throughout the region. As a member of the tour troupe, actors are responsible for transporting the set, loading it in and out of venues and managing activities at community centers. Interns also will be instrumental in collaborating on experimental projects geared toward young professionals that are performed in unconventional venues and teaching pre-show workshops for both touring productions and student matinee performances of main stage productions.
